If you lived in the UK when you turned 16, you should’ve been sent your National Insurance (NI) number already.
If you’re moving to the UK and have a residence permit, your NI number might be printed on the back of your Biometric Residence Permit (BRP) card.
If you don’t have a NI number, you should apply as soon as you can, before you start to work in the UK. You might be able to start work before you receive your NI, but your employer might ask for proof that you’ve applied for one. When you’ve got your NI number, pass it on to your employer.
To apply for an NI number, just give them a call:
- Phone: 0345 600 0643
- Text: 0345 600 0644
Open Monday to Friday, 8am to 6pm.
