I have an eating disorder, is there any help?

Yes there is. It's about finding you the help that you feel would be best for you.

If you’re not sure where to start or just want someone to listen, LUU Advice offer a safe and confidential service completely independent from the Uni, so you don’t have to worry about tutors or your course finding out.

It’s important to know that a lot of people suffer from eating disorders so you are not alone. The main types of eating disorders are Anorexia Nervosa, Bulimia Nervosa and Binge Eating Disorder, but these aren’t the only ones. There are lots of misconceptions about eating disorders and it’s common for people to think they’re “not ill enough” or “not thin enough” to be suffering from an eating disorder; it’s really important to come talk to someone if you’re worried about your eating.

There is support on campus through the Counselling Service if you feel talking to someone would help. You can also talk to your GP who can do a referral to local NHS services for you, if you feel that would help.

There is also help online through the Beat website. You can call their helpline on 0808 801 0677. This helpline is available to anyone over the age of 18 and is open every day 3pm-10pm. You can also email them.

Beat also have some other services that you may find of use:

  • Studentline: a dedicated helpline for students, which is open 365 days a year from 12pm – 8pm during the week, and 4pm – 8pm on weekends and bank holidays. The number for this is 0808 801 0811, and we encourage anyone to contact Studentline whether they have been diagnosed, are worried about themselves or a loved one, or are in recovery. There is an email service that you can use or 1-to-1 webchat available through the Beat website.
  • Owl Support Group: Beat also run an online chatroom every Tuesday at 7pm for students affected by eating disorders. The group is facilitated by Beat staff who help get the conversation started and moderate content to ensure the group is a safe space to share experiences and thoughts.
